OmegaQuant — the number behind the dose.

An independent, CLIA-certified lab founded by the scientist who co-invented the Omega-3 Index. A few drops of blood from a finger stick, mailed in, returns the omega-3 measure used in more than 200 clinical studies. Baseline the roster, set the protocol, and let the retest prove it worked.

About the brand

Who OmegaQuant is.

OmegaQuant is the independent, CLIA-certified lab that turned omega-3 status from a guess into a number.

The number is the Omega-3 Index: the percentage of EPA and DHA in red blood cell membranes, created in 2004 by Dr. William S. Harris and Dr. Clemens von Schacky. Harris is one of the most published scientists in the field, with more than 300 publications on fatty acids, two American Heart Association scientific statements as an author, and five NIH grants for omega-3 research. He founded OmegaQuant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 2009 to make the Index available to researchers, clinicians, and the public, then stepped back from day-to-day leadership in late 2020 to launch the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI). The lab's Director of Research, Kristina Harris Jackson, is a PhD, RD.

The system is built around dried blood spot collection. One to three drops from a finger stick (or a few drops of breast milk for the lactation test), collected in under five minutes, no full blood draw, no prescription, no clinic visit. Kits mail back to the lab, and the FDA determined in 2017 that pre-market approval was not needed for over-the-counter home use of the collection kit. The company has also registered the kit in the EU and Australia, runs lab partners in Europe (University of Stirling) and Australia, and made the Inc. 5000 list in 2019 and 2020.

OmegaQuant also runs a sister supplement company, Parasol Nutrition, whose Informed Sport certified fish oil is built to move the Omega-3 Index and be verified by the test that measures it. Parasol has its own page in the Locker: Parasol Nutrition vendor page.

Why we stock them

Earned the spot.

Omega-3 supplementation usually runs blind. Roughly 90% of Americans sit below the desirable Omega-3 Index range of 8% to 12%, and by the company's own published numbers, 70% of people who already take an omega-3 supplement are still below optimal. The dose was a guess, so the outcome is a guess. OmegaQuant exists to end that: measure the level, set the dose, measure again.

The OmegaQuant difference

They didn't adopt the standard. They invented it.

The Omega-3 Index is not a marketing metric; it's a research instrument Dr. Harris and Dr. von Schacky published in 2004, and it has since served as the standard measure of omega-3 status in more than 200 clinical studies. OmegaQuant calls its version the only omega-3 blood test supported by hundreds of studies in the medical and scientific literature, and the lab has partnered with more than 100 institutions, universities, and companies on Omega-3 Index research.

For a Sports RD, that pedigree translates directly: when you put an athlete's Omega-3 Index in a report, you're using the same instrument the literature uses. The 8% optimal target isn't the vendor's invention to sell product. The vendor is the lab the researchers use.

Why Sports RDs reach for it.

A Note on Certification

OmegaQuant's tests are laboratory services, not supplements: the lab is regulated under CLIA and qualified to perform high-complexity clinical testing, which is the relevant credential for a diagnostic-adjacent product. The supplement-side certifications you'd look for on a powder or capsule (NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport) don't apply to a blood spot kit. There's nothing for an athlete to ingest, so there's nothing for a tested league to flag.

Where We Stand

Most of the supplement industry asks athletes to take products on faith. OmegaQuant inverts that: measure first, dose second, verify third. For a Sports RD, that's not a product feature, it's the professional standard — the difference between recommending omega-3s and managing omega-3 status.

OmegaQuant built the instrument the researchers use and made it simple enough to run from a locker room. That's why OmegaQuant is in the Locker.

What you can shop.

The Locker carries OmegaQuant's at-home test kit lineup: three tiers of the Omega-3 Index test plus the two maternal-health tests.

Omega-3 Index Basic Test

OmegaQuant · The Entry Point
CLIA-Certified LabDried Blood SpotNo Prescription
Form: At-home dried blood spot kit  ·  Sample: 1–3 drops, finger stick  ·  Reports: Omega-3 Index (EPA + DHA as % of red blood cell fatty acids)

The flagship. Measures the athlete's Omega-3 Index against the 8% optimal target established in the research literature. Collection takes under five minutes and the kit mails back to the lab. This is the baseline-and-retest workhorse for building omega-3 protocols with proof attached.

Best for: Roster-wide baselines · pre/post supplementation checks · athlete education with a number attached.

Omega-3 Index Plus Test

OmegaQuant · Added Ratios
CLIA-Certified LabDried Blood SpotNo Prescription
Form: At-home dried blood spot kit  ·  Reports: Omega-3 Index · Omega-6:Omega-3 ratio · AA:EPA ratio · Trans Fat Index

The same collection workflow with a wider report. Adds the Omega-6:Omega-3 and AA:EPA ratios plus the Trans Fat Index, which is useful when the conversation is overall dietary fat quality rather than EPA + DHA status alone.

Best for: Dietary-pattern assessment · athletes mid-nutrition-overhaul · clients who want more than one number.

Omega-3 Index Complete Test

OmegaQuant · The Full Panel
CLIA-Certified LabDried Blood SpotNo Prescription
Form: At-home dried blood spot kit  ·  Reports: All 24 blood fatty acids, plus the Omega-3 Index, Omega-6:Omega-3, AA:EPA, and Trans Fat Index

The full fatty acid panel: every omega-3, omega-6, monounsaturated, saturated, and trans fatty acid the lab measures, in one report. The research-grade view for the RD who wants the complete lipid picture on a high-priority athlete or client.

Best for: Deep-dive consults · complex nutrition cases · practitioners who work the full panel.

Prenatal DHA Test

OmegaQuant · Maternal Health
CLIA-Certified LabDried Blood SpotNo Prescription
Form: At-home dried blood spot kit  ·  Reports: Blood DHA level · 5% target during pregnancy

Measures blood DHA against the 5% level the research says women should aim for during pregnancy.
